Lobo fans journey to San Jose

SAN JOSE (KRQE) - Head Coach Steve Alford said New Mexico Lobos fans are among the best in the country, and News 13 was there as 30 cherry-clad spectators drove from Albuquerque to San Jose.

The bus rolled out of Albuquerque around 8:00 p.m. Wednesday.

30 rabid Lobo fans were ready to rock, but facing a 15-hour drive, sleep became a necessity.

There were a couple of pit stops in the Grand Canyon state and then breakfast finally came in Bakersfield.

The journey was long, but once the cherry-clad contingent made it to the bay area, it was time for fun.

"It's been a beautiful season, I started at UNM in 1968 and this has been one of the most beautiful seasons I can recall," fan Tom Esquivel said.

The Cherry and Silver lined the streets of downtown San Jose and a local pub was overrun by howling fans.

"There is nothing like lobo fans, we follow the team wherever we go," fan Susie Easterling said.

Some New Mexico fans had a little misfortune. Joy Montoya and his family drove to San Jose, but had their car stolen in Bakersfield.

"Next best thing is rent a car, but we couldn't find one, so we ended up getting a subcompact and drove it for the last five hours here," Montoya said.
