Good Lobo season a headache for some

Neighbors say fans park, drink, party, leave trash

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Another season of Lobo Football begins Saturday. There is a new coach, a new season and many new players.

But there is also an old problem for many people who live near the stadium.

Paul Sanchez lives, breaths and sees Lobo football. He also lives right across the street from the University Stadium.

"The first game if they win and they do good, I expect more people to start going to the games and more people to start parking up and down the streets again," Sanchez said.

Sanchez and his family are cool with people parking near their home as long as they don't block the driveway.

But some residents say they have seen problems like public urination, drunks and food and beer cans left in their yards.

In years past, residents worked with the University of New Mexico to get parking permits. They say police even checked who came and went from the neighborhood during games.

But they say that stopped about a year ago, and since then they've been working with UNM to try and come up with a solution.

"Five days before the big event, and nothing," said Paula Welsh who lives near the stadium.

A spokesman for UNM said the city of Albuquerque will give out parking permits to people in the neighborhood, and UNM will pay for signs reminding fans they need a permit to park there on game day.

Those should be in place Sept. 29.

Until then the city will have parking enforcement out in the neighborhood to make sure cars aren't blocking driveways during games.
