ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Voters in the United States do not elect the president directly but instead delegate that duty to the "college of electors."
Commonly called the Electoral College, it consists of 538 electors apportioned to states based on the state's number of senators and representatives, so New Mexico has five electors.
Based on state vote totals, the electors then chose the president who must receive at least 270 of their votes.
If no candidate receives a majority, selecting a president falls to the U.S. House of Representatives.
For more history and detailed information, visit the Electoral College FAQ page on the National Archives and Records Administration website.
