Standoff at Intel plant ends peacefully

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) - A man threatening suicide caused quite a scare overnight in the parking lot of the Intel plant in Rio Rancho.

Police say he had called them shortly before midnight.

When they arrived, they saw the man in a car on the west side of the parking lot.

They closed northbound Highway 528 around the plant, forcing overnight employees at the plant to use an alternate entrance to get to work or return from lunch.

After more than two hours, crisis negotiators were able to convince the man to get out of the car peacefully.

Police found a handgun inside the vehicle after he surrendered.

He hasn't been identified, and police haven't confirmed whether the man is an Intel employee.
