DONNELSVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) - Many Miami Valley families have loved ones stationed at Fort Hood, including the Kohn's of Donnelsville.

Barbara Kohn said her son, Matthew, called home shortly after the shootings.

"I could hear the air raid sirens in the background," said Kohn. "You just kind of got the feeling this is serious. There is something big going on."

Matthew, an Army specialist, just returned from a more than 2 year-long deployment in South Korea. He had only been at Fort Hood for a few weeks.

At last check, Matthew was still on lock down and was ordered to stay away from windows and doors.

His mother said she was relieved that he was safe, but her heart was hurting for the victims and their families.

"I just know that there are a lot of people that are without there loved ones tonight," she said. "You think you are in the U.S. on an Army post, that you are safe."

Here at home, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base officials released this statement:

"Our hearts go out to our fellow service members and their families involved in the terrible circumstances at Fort Hood. We do not foresee any measures at Wright-Patterson that would impact the public at this time."
