ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Albuquerque police are hoping their new Twitter account will help drivers plan ahead and avoid traffic jams.
Police dispatchers plan to use the Twitter account, @ABQPOLICE, to post short updates about crashes and other potential traffic tie-ups.
Users don't have to be registered with Twitter to see the updates, but those registered with the popular microblogging site can follow the account to have its updates automatically appear on their Twitter home pages.
Police are urging drivers to check with the service before hitting the road, not while driving.
Twitter, which began in March 2006, allows users to post short updates of up to 160 characters, which are listed on a timeline for each user, along with a public timeline.
Comments that are derogatory, attack other users, offer unsubstantiated facts, use foul language or are offensive in nature can and will be removed as defined by the Terms of Service.
