THE INTERNET (KRQE) - Happy birthday, ARPANET. The computer network, which laid the foundation for the modern-day Internet, carried the first computer-to-computer message 40 years ago Thursday, according to Forbes.com.

ARPANET introduced a technology called packet-switching, where messages would be broken into small packets and transmitted over a network, allowing a computer to send a message to another without being directly connected.

The Internet was described five years later, and the World Wide Web came around in the late 1980s.
