ABIQUIU, N.M. (AP) - Federal stimulus funding has been awarded to Los Alamos County for a hydroelectric project in northern New Mexico.
The U.S. Department of Energy announced Wednesday that more than $4 million will pay for adding a low-flow turbine to the 13.8 megawatt hydroelectric plant in Abiquiu.
The turbine will increase the plant's total capacity by 3 megawatts and allow the dam to operate when releases are below or above the capacity of the two existing turbines.
With the upgrade, the plant will be able to increase annual power generation by 22 percent.
In all, the department says $30.6 million was awarded to seven hydropower projects around the nation.
