SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) - Santa Fe city councilors will consider a revised telecommunications ordinance Wednesday for the city, which hasn't had one since 2004.
Comcast and Qwest have operated without franchises in Santa Fe since the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the old city ordinance, which required them to lease public rights of way for equipment.
The companies have continued paying their leases at the old rates.
The city has been working on an ordinance at the request of firms interested in building new systems. But councilors postponed a decision last month after an emotional meeting at which police were called to keep order.
The council will take up a revised proposal that requires public hearings before new telecommunications equipment is installed.
