ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A 92-year-old man going the wrong way down a well-traveled highway made for a scary situation Thursday.

Then a state police officer became a hero.

State police officer Justin Davis was in the middle of a traffic stop Thursday on highway 550 near Cuba when David Montoya pulled up looking for directions.

Officer Davis gives him directions back to Albuquerque and clears the highway for Montoya to pull back onto 550, but quickly realizes things aren't right.

Davis lets the first driver go and runs to catch up with Montoya.

Montoya is headed south back to Albuquerque, but he's in the northbound lanes.

As Davis tries to get the elderly man to stop, he suddenly sees headlights coming straight at him at the top of the hill.

Montoya ends up rear-ending Officer Davis and comes to a stop in the median in the center of the highway.

The officer did not ticket Montoya.

There is no word if Montoya took the officer's advice and stopped driving.
