ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) - A Round Rock mother has been arrested after investigators said they caught her toying with her son’s birth certificate to get him into school early.
Maricela Dimas, 24, is charged with tampering with a government document after officials said she changed her son’s birth date from Sept. 15 to Sept. 1.
The time between those two dates determines the cut-off date for enrollees into school. Her son barely missed the birth date requirement.
Round Rock ISD school officials said Dimas gave them a copy of her son’s birth certificate, claiming she didn’t have the original. RRISD enrollers decided to allow her to enroll her son, with the caveat that she would bring his original birth certificate in 30 days - which is required for enrollment into a new school.
Dimas’ arrest warrant said three days later she called the school and confessed to altering her son’s birth certificate. She said she wanted her son enrolled early because her new job conflicted with her ability to get child care, according to the warrant.
Dimas has been arrested on the tampering charges and is still listed in the Williamson County Jail Wednesday afternoon on a $3,000 bond.
