Feds: new contract for Navajo pipeline

GALLUP, N.M. (AP) - The U.S. Interior Department has awarded a $27.7 million contract for the construction of a water pipeline on the Navajo reservation in northwestern New Mexico.

The Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority will use the funds to build the remaining 21-mile stretch of the pipeline.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says the contract signifies progress toward completion of the Animas-La Plata project, which will provide water to the Navajo Nation, Southern Ute Indian Tribe, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe and people in the Four Corners area. The Navajo pipeline was authorized as part of the Animas-La Plata project in 2000 to provide for the delivery of 4,680 acre-feet of municipal and industrial water per year from Farmington to Shiprock.
