KEWA PUEBLO, N.M. (AP) - Kewa Pueblo has received $1 million in federal funds to restore the historic Domingo Trading Post.

Pueblo Gov. Tony Tortalita calls the building "an icon of our history." He says it will stand as a symbol of the pueblo's future and offer a place to showcase Kewa culture and tradition as artisans resume selling jewelry, pottery and other items.

The trading post was consumed by fire in February 2001.

The post's location on the Atcheson, Topeka, and Santa Fe rail line made it a well-known stop for tourists traveling on the Southwest Chief. It was a tourist attraction for 60-some years, welcoming cross-country motorists and dignitaries such as President John F. Kennedy.

The grant was awarded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration.
