ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Democratic New Mexico Sen. Tom Udall is reportedly a possible candidate for the soon-to-be-vacant position of secretary of the interior.

The Washington Post reports outgoing Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who's stepping down in March, suggested Udall as a replacement and that his name has been sent to the White House for consideration.

"The position also holds special significance for me because of the great things my father accomplished as secretary," Udall said in a statement released after his name surfaced.  "While I'm deeply flattered to be mentioned, my sights are set on fighting for New Mexico on the Appropriations Committee and earning re-election from the people of our state in 2014."

Other names that have been discussed including Washington's outgoing Gov. Chris Gregoire and Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz.
