ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - It's confirmed two New Mexico airports are among the airports that will lose their air traffic controllers because of federal budget cuts.
The announcement came down Friday that Santa Fe's Municipal Airport and Double Eagle II Airport on Albuquerque’s Westside will be among 149 airports affected nationwide.
According to the FAA, pilots will have to coordinate take-offs and landings among themselves over the radio which is what they are trained to do. Even so, critics worry shutting down so many of the nation's air traffic control towers could affect safety.
The changes take effect April 7, 2013. No other New Mexico airports are on the list.
