SANTA FE (KRQE) - Gov. Susana Martinez's pick to be education secretary will finally get a confirmation hearing in the state Senate.
The Senate Rules Committee is scheduled to consider Hanna Skandera's nomination to run the Public Education Department on Friday.
Skandera has run the agency as secretary-designate since Martinez took office in 2011, but the governor had not submitted her nomination to the Democratic-controlled Senate for consideration.
Under the state Constitution, the leader of the Public Education Department must be a "qualified, experienced educator."
However, Skandera has never worked as a teacher or administrator.
