SF mayor seeks tighter gun control laws

SANTA FE (KRQE) - Monday is the one-month anniversary of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
    
Santa Fe Mayor David Coss marked the anniversary by joining mayors across the country to demand tighter gun control laws.
    
He says the reforms needed are just common sense.
    
Mayor Coss says the city of Santa Fe is limited in what gun laws they can legislate.
   
Monday, he joined Santa Fe Police Chief Raymond Rael and former state DPS Secretary John Denko, saying tighter gun laws ultimately need to come from Washington.
    
Mayor Coss says he will be in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday to lobby congress on gun reform.

“Every mayor knows every community is suffering from gun violence….not necessarily a mass shooting like Newtown or Aurora but it could happen here,” Mayor Coss said.
    
They also debuted a national ad that will be airing locally. 
    
It features family members of victims of gun violence.
    
The ad is sponsored by the group Mayors Against Gun Violence.       
    
The reforms Mayor Coss and other mayors are calling for include background checks for all gun sales, and taking high capacity weapons and ammunition off the streets.

The city of Santa Fe is also trying to get guns off the streets.
    
On Saturday, they held a gun buy-back event and collected 195 guns in just two hours.
    
People had the opportunity to drop of guns anonymously and get up to $100 in return.
