SANTA FE (KRQE) - A bill that would have allowed up to three employees to have guns at New Mexico schools has been killed in the state Senate Finance Committee.

The proposal called for three designated school employees to be allowed to carry handguns.

The bill's sponsor, Sen. Sue Wilson Beffort, R-Sandia Park, believes the new legislation will prevent future shootings.

Under current law only police officers and school security guards can carry guns at schools.
