ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The debt standoff in Washington could have a major impact on New Mexicans. News 13 asked the four major candidates for U.S. Senate where they stand on the standoff.
Surprising, only two of the four candidates wanted to talk about it.
Democratic Congressman Martin Henrich says he favors drawing down U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and ending tax breaks for the very wealthy as possible solutions to the national debt.
State Auditor Hector Balderas is Henrich's chief opponent in the Democratic Senate primary. He says members of Congress from both parties should not receive their paychecks if a deal can't be reached.
As for the two major Republicans in the running for Senate -- former Congresswoman Heather Wilson didn't want any part of our story.
A spokesman for Lt. Gov. John Sanchez said he'd send us a statement. He never did.
