SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Descendants of frontier lawman Pat Garrett personally delivered a message to New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson that they're opposed to a posthumous pardon for outlaw Billy the Kid, who was killed by Garrett nearly 130 years ago.

Three grandchildren of Garrett and two great-grandchildren met Wednesday with Richardson in his office in the state Capitol. After the meeting, the Garretts said Richardson told them he hasn't made a decision about a pardon.

The possibility of a posthumous pardon has angered Garrett's grandchildren, who say it would be an insult to recognize such a violent outlaw.

Garrett shot down Billy the Kid on July 14, 1881. Garrett tracked him after the outlaw escaped from the Lincoln County jail in a famous gunbattle that left two deputies dead.
