ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - Hispanic advocacy groups and northern New Mexico Democrats are challenging new political districts for a state utility regulator.
The New Mexico League of United Latin American Citizens filed a lawsuit in federal court last Friday seeking to invalidate Public Regulation Commission districts that were ordered by a state court judge.
The lawsuit contends the redistricting plan dilutes Hispanic voting power in northern New Mexico by moving most of San Miguel and Mora counties into a solidly Republican district in eastern New Mexico. The counties previously were in a Democratic district with Santa Fe and north-central and northeastern New Mexico.
Others bringing the lawsuit are the Hispanic Roundtable of New Mexico, the American G.I. Forum of New Mexico and the San Miguel, Rio Arriba, Taos and Mora county Democratic parties and their leaders.
