ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A new Rasmussen poll out Thursday shows Democratic Congressman Martin Heinrich with a commanding 13 point lead over Republican former Congresswoman Heather Wilson, 52-39, in the race for New Mexico Senate.
In late August, the same poll had Heinrich leading Wilson 48-42.
The candidates are vying to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Jeff Bingaman.
But political observers said poll numbers can change quickly once the debate season starts.
"This is just a snapshot in time," said UNM Political Science Professor Gabe Sanchez. "This is just how voters in this particular poll thought about the election right now. Things can change within a week."
The candidates will spar on KRQE News 13 beginning at 6 p.m. in the first of four televised debates before election day. The debate will be different with no time limits and no traditional question-and-answer format. The candidates can take the time they want to challenge and defend their positions in an effort to reach out to voters statewide.
Stay with KRQE News 13 on-air and online for full debate highlights.
