SANTA FE (KRQE) - In preparation for the state's centennial in 2012, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson on Tuesday unveiled a new license plate design commemorating the anniversary.
The centennial plate, available in January, will have yellow lettering on a turquoise background. A yellow Zia symbol with the center circle filled in red will be in the center of the plate, and the text "New Mexico" and "Land of Enchantment" will be at the bottom.
Through 2012, the plates will read "Centennial 1912-2012" at the top. That phrase will be replaced after the commemoration ends.
The new plates will replace the current hot air balloon-themed license plate. The governor's office is taking public input as to whether to phase out the older red-on-yellow license plate design.
