BALTIMORE (KRQE) - Former U.S. Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico went into surgery in Baltimore late Monday afternoon.

Surgeons at Johns Hopkins are performing a reverse shoulder replacement on the 77-year-old political legend whose final term ended six months ago.

Domenici has suffered from nerve damage in his right arm and hand since 2000, when he was injured playing touch football with his grandchildren.

He was the longest serving senator in New Mexico history.

Domenici also has a degenerative brain disease, which led to his retirement.
