ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A sculpture honoring Harry Kinney, a two-time mayor and long time public servant, was unveiled in Albuquerque's Civic Plaza on Sunday.

Several of Kinney's friends, former staffers and family watched as Mayor Martin Chavez revealed the sculpture.

The stature was crafted by renowned artist Reynaldo Sonny River.

Kinney served on the county commission five years, the city commission for seven years and for the last three he served as chairman, which is equivalent to mayor.

He then became Albuquerque's first mayor under the new form of government in 1974. He was reelected to the office in 1981.

Kinney had a large hand in shaping Albuquerque by helping clean up the city, fund beautification projects and annex land to grow the city.

Kinney died in 2006. He was an engineer by trade, and was born in Raton, N.M.

Sunday would have been his 85th birthday.
