ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - An officer from Kirtland Air Force Base received the Bronze Star medal Monday for his service in Iraq.
Lt. Col. William Walkowiak was in charge of building the Iraqi Military Academy for the country's air force.
His leadership took place during 80 indirect fire attacks.
"I'm proud to wear it," Walkowiak said. "Sadly there's a lot of people that died getting this medal so it's hard to feel that you are worthy of it.
"I don't wear it just for me but for all the guys that are still there and the people that helped me in our mission while I was there."
The
Bronze Star is awarded to any person who distinguishes themselves by
heroic or meritorious achievement or service.
