ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - At one time Dan Foley was one of the most powerful Republicans in the state, and now it appears the former lawmaker is breaking the law.
Red light cameras catch thousands of vehicles speeding through the busy intersection of Carlisle and Montgomery in Albuquerque.
Earlier this month, a silver pickup truck was caught doing 46 mph in a 35 mph zone. The car had New Mexico government plates.
The plate identifies the driver as the representative from District 57, but it's not Roswell Rep. Dennis Kintigh's car and it's not him behind the wheel.
The driver is former House Minority Whip Dan Foley.
The 10 year state representative lost last year's election, and the rights to use the plates too.
The law states the government plates shall be immediately removed and returned to the Motor Vehicle Division after an official leaves the office.
However it's been six months, and Foley's car still sports the plates.
The former state representative told News 13 in a phone interview that he wasn't aware of that law. Foley also said he planned to return the plates when they expire so he doesn’t have to pay MVD fees again to reregister his car.
The statue calling for the immediate return of plates does not contain direct penalties for noncompliance.
