ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The American Civil Liberties Union on Tuesday announced that the state has settled a two-year-old lawsuit, agreeing to provide retirement health insurance to the domestic partners of state employees.

According to an ACLU news release, the organization filed the lawsuit in February 2007 on behalf of gay and lesbian state employees and their domestic partners, saying the state constitution requires the state treat gay and lesbian employees the same as straight employees.

The state agreed to develop a process for enrolling domestic partners during the next open enrollment period, which is this fall.
