FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - The National High School Finals Rodeo will not be invited back to northwestern New Mexico in 2014.
The Tres Rios High School Rodeo Association voted Tuesday not to ask the rodeo back because of the national association's lack of concern for the losses communities incurred hosting the event.
The rodeo association estimated hosting the high school finals rodeo cost local governments about $225,000.
Tres Rios Executive Committee members cited concerns the Denver-based rodeo association has continued to request increased local investment, while charging the communities $55,000 each year to host the event and taking a large share of other revenue.
National High School Rodeo Association Executive Director Kent Sturman said Tuesday he was surprised to hear Farmington would not seek the 2014 rodeo and hadn't heard about financial losses.
