ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - With gas prices on the rise, President Barack Obama is making a stop in New Mexico's oil fields Wednesday to tout the fact that domestic oil and gas production is at an all-time high.
But he'll also be stepping into solidly Republican territory dominated by an industry upset with his environmental policies and what it says is inadequate funding to push production to the levels needed to bring fuel costs down.
Steve Henke, president of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association, says if the administration is serious about increasing production it needs to halt plans to list the dunes sagebrush lizard as an endangered species. He says it also needs to increase funding at the Bureau of Land Management Office in Carlsbad so it can process more drilling permits.
