ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - President Barack Obama's new budget proposal puts plans for a controversial, $6 billion dollar nuclear lab at Los Alamos on hold.
Obama's proposed 2013 spending plan calls for the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement Nuclear Facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory to be deferred for at least five years. The project has been plagued for years by cost overruns and questions about potential earthquake activity in the area.
It's unclear what long-term impact the action could have on LANL and its mission for maintaining and developing the country's stockpile of nuclear weapons.
The budget proposal says the National Nuclear Security Administration "has determined in consultation with the national laboratories that existing infrastructure in the nuclear complex has the inherent capacity to provide adequate support for these missions."
