ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State Sen. Clint Harden has announced that he will retire from the Legislature at the end of his term.
The Clovis Republican said in a statement Saturday that he would step down after 18 years of public service. He says he decided to announce his retirement earlier than expected after supporters and his constituents asked about re-election plans.
Harden represents District 7, an area in eastern New Mexico that includes Quay, Harding, Union and Colfax counties. He has been in the state Senate since 2002, and was last elected in 2008.
He has served as the secretary of the state labor department under a fellow Republican, then-Gov. Gary Johnson.
Harden says he considers it a "privilege to have worked for and with the people of this great state."
