SANTA FE (KRQE) - A children's advocacy group is hoping the latest statistics on child poverty, teen births and math and reading proficiency will encourage action by the Legislature.
Advocates with New Mexico Voices for Children" gathered at the capitol shortly before the Legislature convened Tuesday to release the annual New Mexico Kids Count report.
The report shows 42 percent of New Mexico children now live in single-parent households.
It also shows the state ranks last when it comes to the reading proficiency of fourth graders.
Overall the report ranks New Mexico 49th in child well-being.
