ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Protesters stood outside of an Albuquerque church Sunday, upset at the pastor for making remarks about gay people serving in public office.
Legacy Church Pastor Steve Smothermon recently expressed he was upset with governor Susana Martinez for appointing a gay man to the state public regulation commission.
He is quoted as saying that she ran on being socially conservative but isn't governing like she is.
A group of protesters said church should stay out of politics and that gays and lesbians have the right to be in public office just as anyone else.
“This pastor wants to say that he's not qualified because he was gay…makes no sense to me. Let's get the best qualified people into these offices,” Jesse Lopez said.
We are still waiting on a statement from the church.
