ROME, ITALY (KRQE) - New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez got to witness the inauguration of Pope Francis along with other members of a small presidential delegation led by Vice President Joe Biden.
Martinez talked about the rare opportunity saying it was very special to be chosen. She believes her deceased mother played a role in it all.
Martinez says she carried a picture of her mother with her, hoping Pope Francis would bless it.
"I sit back and think who am I to be chosen? There are so many governor's leaders in this country, why me? I sit here and hold this picture and I have to say, because I believe even in that you don't see, that she had to have a hand in this." says Martinez
Martinez says her family life has always revolved around the catholic church. She says her parents, who were not wealthy, made great sacrifices to send them to catholic school. She also remembers visiting church frequently during holy week, always praying the rosary and delivering flowers to the virgin Mary.
Martinez says witnessing the Pope's inauguration is special for many reasons but it also falls on a significant day. The anniversary of her mother's death.
Martinez planned to say many prayers during the mass. One, that her family is able to recover from the death of her mother and recent death of her father. Also, that Pope Francis can restore faith in the catholic church by those who have left.
She also prays for the people of New Mexico that the state continues to move forward in a successful way and that New Mexicans will have faith that she will do the right things for them.
