What is Katie's Law?
In January of 2006, "Katie's Bill", which requires DNA for most felony arrests for inclusion in the database, was passed by the New Mexico state legislature in only thirty days. The bill was signed into law in March 2006 and went into effect on January 1, 2007. After passing "Katie’s Law" in New Mexico, Dave and Jayann dedicated themselves to getting similar legislation passed nationwide.Governor Martinez is urging lawmakers to expand Katie’s Law.

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) - Governor Susana Martinez conducted a press conference at 1 p.m. on Tuesday discussing the expansion of Katie's Law.
Gov. Martinez is asking that the law require DNA sampling to be taken from all individuals arrested for felony crimes.
Katie's Law was passed in 2006, following the murder of Katie Sepich, a New Mexico State University student whose killer was eventually convicted with help of a DNA match.
