SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Secretary of State Dianna Duran's office says it plans to seek access to a federal immigration database for use in checking whether noncitizens have improperly registered to vote in New Mexico.
Duran's chief of staff Ken Ortiz said Tuesday the office will ask the Department of Homeland Security for access to the database, which has information on immigrants who are legally living in the country.
Duran's office last year reviewed voter registration files and said it identified at least 100 people who appeared to be noncitizens. The office compared registration rolls with driver's license data for foreign nationals and Social Security information.
Duran wrote a letter earlier this month in support of efforts by Colorado's secretary of state to obtain information from the immigration database.
