ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - It is day two of the LULAC National Convention in Albuquerque. One of big issues this week is immigration reform.
LULAC president Rosa Rosada said it is their mission to make sure Latinos are not racially profiled as the country tries to crack down on illegal immigration. LULAC filed a lawsuit in Arizona over its controversial new immigration policy.
LULAC members are also keeping a close eye on immigration policies in New Mexico including the one announced recently by Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry. The law allows immigration and customs officers at Metropolitan Detention Center at all times to check the immigration status of anyone brought into the jail.
"I think we need to work together to do a citizen advisor to make sure racial profiling doesn't happen," said LULAC state representative Pablo Martinez.
"We are glad to discuss any idea," said David Campbell. "We have been open to idea of all kinds and want to make sure the civil rights of all people are protected.
