DURANGO, Colo. (KRQE-KREZ) - A giant chicken — or at least a person in a chicken costume — paid a visit to Tuesday's Durango City Council meeting as councilors considered the wording of a recently passed backyard chicken ordinance.

The council was discussing requiring would-be chicken-keepers make their pens predator-resistant, trying to keep bears and other animals away from the chickens, when the chicken-person walked into the chamber's audience gallery, drawing laughs from the council.

The chicken sat patiently as the councilors discussed the ordinance, rocking its head and silently expressing approval for various parts of the language they were considering.

At one point, the chicken held a sign with a checkmark and the word "Chickn" with the K backwards.

After debating the language changes for about 8 minutes, the council voted 4 to 1 in favor of the changes. The chicken got up from it seat, clucked, crouched and left behind an egg on the floor.

Councilors told the Durango Herald they were amused by the drop-in chicken. Its identity is unknown.
