SANTA FE, NM (KRQE) - A bill that would toughen penalties for careless drivers who seriously hurt or kill someone passed the house Sunday.
The bill was prompted by an increase in the number of bicyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists being killed on the roads by careless driving.
Currently the charge is a misdemeanor punishable by 90 days in jail and a $300 fine, even if you kill someone. However under the new bill, offenders would face up to a year in jail.
Those offenders would include drivers who cause a crash while texting or talking on the phone.
The measure now moves to the senate.
