ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - New Mexico Gov.-elect Susana Martinez said the state has more important things to worry about than a pardon for Billy the Kid.
Democratic Gov. Bill Richardson has been considering the idea of pardoning the Old West outlaw for killing the Lincoln County sheriff in 1878.
Since Richardson's term ends Dec. 31, he has only a few days left to decide.
Martinez, a Republican, said Tuesday there's so much more for the state to consider.
She mentioned such issues as New Mexico needing to balance its budget and a controversy over a proposed move of the state DNA laboratory.
Martinez says there's an awful lot of work to be done for the state to be wasting so much time on Billy the Kid.
