DURANGO, CO (KRQE) - A Durango man was killed over the weekend in a deadly avalanche near Silverton.

Authorities say Peter Carver, Duncan Rothwell and Nathaniel Klema were all skiing near Clothesline Path when they triggered an avalanche.

The avalanche buried Carver and pinned the other two men against nearby trees.

Klema and Rothwell found Carver’s beacon and found him buried in five feet of snow.  By the time they reached him it was too late.

Carver, a Fort Lewis student, was the son of Bill and Karen Carver who won Carver Brewing in Durango.

Carver’s friends set up a memorial for the man outside the Durango restaurant.

Investigators say the avalanche that killed Carver was especially massive, snapping trees as thick as eight inches in diameter.
