SANDIA PUEBLO, N. M. (KRQE) - Three people died late Thursday morning when a sports car
crossed the median into oncoming traffic on Interstate 25 between
Albuquerque and Bernalillo.
A man in the sports car heading north and two women in a
southbound car died in the crash, Sandoval County Undersheriff Tim
Lucero told KRQE News 13. The fatalities were just the latest
involving vehicles going one way crossing the unprotected median
into traffic going the other way.
Deputies identified the two women as Joan Anton, 72, and Dora
Boyd, 73, from Torreón in western Sandoval County. The
man in the sports car was from Colorado, but his name will not be
released until his family is notified.
The crash shut down southbound I-25 for 3 1/2 hours.
The crash took place around 11 a.m. a few miles south of
Bernalillo. The Lotus disintegrated in the collision while
the women's car ended up on its top.
The sheriff's office would not confirm reports the Lotus was
speeding when it swerved into the median and tumbled into the path
of the oncoming car.
The state Department of Transportation said cable barriers
designed to prevent cross-over crashes are planned for I-25 from
Tramway Boulevard on Albuquerque's north side to La Bajada near
Santa Fe.
Work is supposed to start in the next year or so, according
to the DOT.
