CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) — A police union says Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway "abused his authority" by ordering police officers to fix traffic tickets and issue citations.
The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports (http://bit.ly/YuLJIf) that the Carlsbad Police Officers Association recently submitted documents to the New Mexico Attorney General's Office that alleges Janway ordered changes to citations from an illegally parked car to a dog without tags.
Det. Sergeant Allen Sanchez, president of the CPOA, says union members want to put a stop to the mayor's behavior.
Janway said in written statement that he wouldn't comment on the allegations until he's contacted by the Attorney General's Office.
The state attorney general's office confirmed that officials are looking into the allegations. A spokesman said the office is expected to make a decision soon on how officials will proceed.
