ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Three police officers have fatally shot a man following a two-hour search and chase in Albuquerque.
Police Chief Ray Schultz says the shooting occurred late Tuesday as the armed man was running toward a popular hotel and the officers concluded he was a danger to the public.
The chief says the man, whose name has not been released, pointed a silver handgun at officers several times before he was shot.
It was the city's 18th fatal officer-involved shooting since 2010. The department is under a federal investigation related to excessive force allegations.
The chief says the latest shooting came after officers searched the city's Northeast Heights area for two men who had been linked to a woman trying to sell or return stolen musical instruments to a store.
