ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The FBI has a new most wanted man in New Mexico.
Francisco Melgar-Cabrera has been on the run ever since the fatal shooting of a cook during a robbery at a Denny’s restaurant in Albuquerque a year and a half ago.
He and two other illegal immigrants stormed the restaurant full of customers at Coors Road and I-40.
One of the other bandits was not wearing shoes. He slipped on the tile floor, his gun went off and the bullet killed Stephanie Anderson, who was mixing pancake batter.
Marvin Lopez –Aguilar, whose gun fired the shot, and Pablo Deleon Ortiz were caught, but Melgar-Cabrera got away.
“There is no telling where he's at, I do know that the FBI has the ability to kind of garner further leads because they're a federal agency, but where his whereabouts are right now, its only a guess, we have no idea,” Officer Robert Gibbs said.
In the weeks after the robbery there was talk that Melgar-Cabrera had fled to Mexico. He is originally from El Salvador.
Police think the three pulled other armed robberies on the West Side of Albuquerque, and they have been linked to the multinational MS-13 gang.
Federal officials are prosecuting the case. Officials announced that they will not seek the death penalty.
