Cannon, former airman settle lawsuit

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A former airman from Cannon Air Force base who was discharged because he' s gay and stripped of some of his severance pay has won his legal fight.
Richard Collins, a former staff sergeant was discharged in 2006 when his homosexuality was discovered.
As a result, half of his severance pay was stripped.
Collins and the ACLU went on to file a class action lawsuit on behalf of 180 other discharged veterans in the same situation.
The defense department has now agreed to a settlement, restoring the benefits of all these veterans.
It adds up to $2.4 million.
The ACLU says the lawsuit was necessary because the benefits were not automatically restored after Don't Ask Don't Tell was repealed.
