LAS CRUCES (KRQE) - A Christmas gift almost turned into heartbreak for a family in Las Cruces.

Dona Ana County animal control and fire crews had to rescue a puppy who wound up at the bottom of a 12-foot abandoned well.

The puppy's owner says she knew about the well and had barricaded it so the dog wouldn't fall, but the puppy's curiosity got the best of it.

Crews brought in a remote-control camera and used PVC pipe with rope and four hours later the puppy was brought up safely.

The puppy's owner got the animal as a gift for her kids and didn't even have enough time to name it before the accident.
