MOGOLLON, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico state police say two Fort Bliss soldiers and an El Paso woman reported overdue from a kayak trip in the Gila National Forest on Monday are believed to be fine.
Lt. Robert McDonald says that Sgt. Nicholas Mummert was found late Monday as he was making his way back to his car, and searchers are waiting for Spc. Alton Weber and his fiancée, Angelica Gonzales, to arrive at Turkey Creek junction on the Gila River.
Fort Bliss officials had initially reported that the three, and possibly two other soldiers , were on a kayaking trip on the Mogollon Creek.
Gila National Forest trails specialist John Kramer told the Silver City Sun-News that the three were on a portion of the Gila River.
Update: State Police report the second soldier and his fiancée have now walked out and are fine.
