LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - The Mexican consulate was given custody Friday of a boy with
Down syndrome who was found alone at the Santa Teresa port of entry
in southern New Mexico.
The Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department said authorities
learned the boy had walked away from a shelter in Ciudad Juarez.
Earlier in the day, a spokeswoman for the state Children,
Youth and Families Department said the agency awaited documents
from Mexican authorities to see if the boy was a child missing from
Juarez's child welfare system.
The Spanish-speaking boy - nicknamed Beto by CYFD workers -
was found at the port of entry Wednesday.
Authorities have said they believe he is between 10 and 16.
